Our mission

Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee titleholders are ambassadors for the state of Tennessee. She travels across her state speaking with other representatives and members of the community about the issues and triumphs of individuals with disabilities. While contestants are showcased in a pageant format, Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee is not a contest of beauty. It is a competition, started in 1974, to select the most accomplished and articulate spokesperson for people with disabilities across the State of Tennessee. Competitors take part in a yearly event which includes team-building exercises, educational workshops, and several interviews by a panel of judges. The program culminates in a formal ceremony to feature the competitors and to name the new Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee. At the formal ceremony, competitors present their platform speeches and answer fishbowl questions asked by the judges before an audience.

The Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee organization is charged with a continuing effort to educate the public regarding the dignity, productiveness, and values of people with disabilities. Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee must be able to communicate both the needs and the abilities of her constituency to the general public, the business community, and government officials. Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee will have the opportunity to travel and make public appearances throughout the State.

She will ultimately go on to represent Tennessee at the. Ms. Wheelchair America Competition. Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee is a nonprofit organization with no paid staff. All expenses for the program and events are obtained through fundraising efforts, donations, and contestant sponsors.
